6 tips for getting more out of LinkedIn

LinkedIn is becoming one of the fastest growing business communities on the web. It started as a way to look for a job, but LinkedIn is now more and more an active networking environment. How can you use LinkedIn to improve your career or business?

1. Use an appealing photo

Not everybody uploads a photo of themselves. You might not think yourself attractive enough or you feel an online photo would not benefit your presence on LinkedIn. Well, LinkedIn is an online social networking event. This means it’s the place for personal branding. It’s all about creating a personal profile online and telling people what kind of work you are doing. People want to know who they are dealing with.

But posting any photo of yourself on LinkedIn is not enough. Try to choose a formal photo of yourself wearing clothes that suit your career or business. A holiday snapshot in a bathing suit will not do…

2. Optimize your profile

Your LinkedIn profile is not just an online CV. You have to update your profile regularly with business insights and updates. There are several ways to optimize your profile for LinkedIn:

  • Your summary box should include exactly what you are doing, what you are interested in and your vision on your profession.
  • If you have a Twitter account, why not add it to your LinkedIn profile?
  • In the experience section, tell your profile visitor what you have achieved and how it improved you personally as well as the company you worked for.
  • Add keywords in your summary box

LinkedIn will show you a progress bar on the right side. Try to achieve a 100% completion status.

3. Actively build connections

A profile with a lot of connections clearly communicates that you are an active user of LinkedIn. People are more likely to contact you through LinkedIn if they see you are using it on a regular basis.

The internet is a fast medium. The attention span for a LinkedIn profile is just a matter of a few seconds. If you can show ‘the numbers’ in combination with an optimized profile, the visitor is more likely to be interested in you.

4. Look for valuable recommendations from your LinkedIn network

Probably one of the best features of LinkedIn is the recommendation option. It’s the best exposure you can get. It basically tells the world you did a good job. You should start by asking your current manager or a good customer to write a recommendation. But why not also approach your previous boss if the relationship is still good? Getting recommendations on all the jobs you have done will definitely show you as being trustworthy and professional

5. Become a member of a LinkedIn group

Groups are good ways to increase your professional network on LinkedIn. Be selective and try groups which fit your profession. 6. Link to your profile

What I just did for our Simply Business Group in the previous paragraph, you can do for yourself as well. Start by linking from your email signature, add a link to your website and mention your LinkedIn profile if you post an article.
