SA302 is an official tax calculation from HMRC that can be used to prove your income once you’ve submitted your Self Assessment. You can use this statement to show up to four years of income tax.
This can be useful if you need to show your earnings, for example if you’re self-employed and applying for a mortgage.
SA302 – quick summary
- it’s an official tax calculation from HMRC
- summarises your income and tax details from previous tax years
- useful for proving how much you earn when applying for a loan or mortgage
This article has been updated for the 2025-26 tax year. Read on to find out more about how to get your SA302 calculation and what it’s used for.
What is an SA302?
SA302 is a way to show your last four years of earnings outside of PAYE, for example if you’re self-employed or run a side hustle.
A mortgage lender may use this to assess whether your income is accurate and that you can afford a particular mortgage product.
Most lenders will accept a printed version, but make sure you check this list of mortgage providers who accept printed summaries for proof of earnings on the UK government website.
You might also request your SA302 if you’re applying for a business loan.

Why do I need an SA302?
If you’re self-employed or run a small business then you won’t have a regular payslip that clearly shows how much you earn. This can make applying for loans or investment difficult as you’ll need to prove that you can afford to borrow money.
A SA302 is a calculation that’s officially recognised by lenders and gives an accurate summary of what you’ve earned in the tax year, and how much tax you’ve paid.
Make sure you check what your lender needs to see and the format it should be in, as this can vary depending on what you’re applying for.
SA302 example – what does an SA302 look like?
Your SA302 tax calculation will include sources of income, for example:
- pay from any employment
- profit from self-employment
- profit from UK land and property
- dividends from companies
- details of UK pension and benefits
- calculations of income tax
How to get an SA302
You have to wait at least 72 hours after submitting your Self Assessment tax return before you can print your SA302 and other documents. But once you’ve requested it, you can download your SA302 form straight away.
The way you request your SA302 form depends on how you filed your tax return. You can get it through:
- HMRC’s online services
- third-party commercial software.
If you filed a paper return then HRMC will send your SA302 calculation by post. But it’s worth remembering that Making Tax Digital plans mean soon you won’t be able to file paper returns at all.
Using HMRC’s online services or HMRC app
If you filed your tax return online, follow the below steps to learn how to download SA302.
- Log in to your HMRC online account using your Government Gateway credentials
- Go to ‘Self Assessment’
- Click ‘More Assessment Details’
- Download and print your SA302 from here
If you need an SA302 for a different tax year, you just need to click ‘Tax Return Options’ in the menu and select the relevant year.
You can also download your SA302 form through the HMRC app. Just login as usual and go to the Self Assessment section. You can then select SA302 tax calculation for your chosen tax year.
Commercial software
If you or your accountant uses commercial software for your small business accounting, you can find your SA302 form through the software you use.
It may be called a different name, like ‘tax computation’, and will be visible in your tax breakdown dashboard.
If you have any problems getting your documents then you’ll need to contact HMRC.
What is a tax overview?
Your tax year overview shows the amount of tax you owe, or any HMRC refunds expected, for the remainder of the current tax year. This is produced by HMRC after you complete your Self Assessment and is used by lenders to check that the information in your SA302 is correct.
How to print your tax year overview:
- Log in to your HMRC online account
- Select Self Assessment
- Go to the tax year you want the SA302 calculation for
- View your SA302 tax calculation
- Select ‘print your tax year overview’
- Save it as PDF
Do I need an SA302 for every mortgage application?
You can use the same SA302 for multiple mortgage applications. But as lenders typically need to see four years of income to assess affordability, you’ll need to download an SA302 for each tax year across this period.
Is an SA302 the same as a tax return?
An SA302 is formed from the information you gave as part of your Self Assessment. It’s not the same as a tax return but it does show your income for each tax year, based on your previous tax returns.
