How does Vinted work?

Vinted is a free online marketplace for second-hand clothing, shoes, and accessories. Unlike eBay, it doesn’t charge sellers fees – instead buyers pay a small service fee when purchasing. This makes Vinted especially attractive if you want to keep more of your earnings.

Key Vinted features:

  • free to list items
  • buyer-funded fees
  • prepaid shipping options (Evri, Royal Mail, Yodel)
  • popular in the UK and Europe

Alice, a pro Vinted side hustler who earns around £70 a month, chose Vinted for both the app’s interface and the lack of seller fees. She says: “I used eBay for a while but found the interface unappealing and difficult to use. There were so many fields to fill in that it became time consuming to upload things.

“I downloaded Vinted out of curiosity, sold a few things on there, and got to keep the full amount from the sale. I haven’t been on eBay since.”

How to sell on Vinted

Selling on Vinted is straightforward. Here’s a five-step process to get started:

1. Download the app and set up your account

    • create a profile with clear details and a friendly photo
    • add a bio that builds trust (a good example would be “selling quality pre-loved fashion in London”)

    2. Create your first listing

      • take good quality photos in natural light with a neutral background
      • include multiple angles and close-ups of any labels or flaws
      • write honest, detailed descriptions (include information on the brand, size, condition, and material)

Alice reveals: “Using a coherent style for all your photos makes your Vinted page seem more high-quality. You can get much better traction on your items by either properly styling them with a good outfit or using a nice background.

“I also make sure to take all my photos in natural light, include photos of me wearing the clothes, and include close ups of labels – which saves me time on the admin of answering questions about the items.

“You can also use AI to write your item descriptions. Make sure to ask it to include relevant keywords that will drive more traffic to your item.”

      3. Set a fair price

        • research similar items on Vinted to help figure out what you should charge
        • offer bundle discounts to encourage bigger orders – call this out in your listing
        • Vinted includes a ‘Make an Offer’ button – knowing that buyers are likely to send you offers, try listing your items for slightly more than you’d be willing to sell them for
        •  Use Vinted’s recommended pricing method if you need more guidance:
        Item conditionSuggested price
New with tags, new without tags80% to 60% of the retail price
Very good60% to 40% of the retail price
Good, satisfactory40% to 20% of the retail price

        4. Arrange shipping

          • choose between Evri, Royal Mail, InPost, Yodel, DPD, or buyer-arranged shipping
          • use secure packaging and always keep proof of postage

          5. Get paid

            • funds are released once the buyer confirms delivery
            • withdraw money directly to your bank account

How to sell faster on Vinted

Want to move stock quickly? Try these proven tips:

            1. Refresh old listings to push them higher in search listings
            2. Price competitively, especially for high-street brands
            3. Offer discounts on bundles
            4. Respond quickly to messages from buyers
            5. List at peak times — Alice believes that evenings and weekends are best

Got an item that’s just not selling? Alice suggests:

            • reducing the price to shift the item quickly
            • relisting the item with better photos to target more buyers

Do you need to pay tax on Vinted sales?

Occasional sellers clearing out their wardrobes don’t usually need to pay tax. But if you sell regularly with the intention of making a profit, HMRC may class this as trading income. If this applies to you, make sure you:

            • keep records of sales if you earn more than £1,000 in a tax year
            • check HMRC’s trading allowance rules
            • consider registering as self-employed if you’re running a side business

Read our guide to Vinted tax for online sellers for more detail.

How to boost your Vinted listings

You can also boost your listings to give them more visibility.

            Item bump

You can pay to bump an item, putting it higher in search results for either three or seven days – or until it sells.

Bumping an item features your listings in the algorithms of users most likely to be interested, based on their previous search and buying history.

The cost of bumping an item will differ depending on the price of your listing, whether you’re bumping for three or seven days, and whether you’re bumping it locally or internationally.

            Wardrobe Spotlight

Wardrobe Spotlight boosts your entire Vinted account – not just an individual item. Vinted users will see your Wardrobe Spotlight in their search results, seeing up to five items that they’re most likely to be interested in.

Wardrobe Spotlight lasts up to seven days and the cost varies depending on what’s for sale in your wardrobe.

How to make a bundle on Vinted as a seller

Vinted allows sellers to create ‘sets’ or ‘bundle’ discounts. These can include up to five items in each set and can be a good way to stand out on the app. Think about grouping items that complement each other – they could be a similar style of item, make up a full outfit, or belong to a specific trend or aesthetic.

Buyers also benefit from bundles as it helps reduce postage costs.

To create a bundle or set, you’ll need to make sure:

            • your item description clearly states it’s a set
            • the first picture in the listing shows all the items in the set (as one image, not as a collage)
            • the other pictures show each individual item.

If you add an item to a set, it can’t also have its own individual listing.

Things going well? Try Vinted Pro

If your Vinted side hustle is going well, you could consider upgrading to Vinted Pro. Vinted Pro is a way of selling on Vinted for registered businesses – whether you’re a sole trader or limited company.

With no limits on the amount you can sell, it’s designed specifically for those looking to sell a large quantity of items. Vinted Pro sellers also receive additional ‘bumps’ in order to promote their products on the app’s feed.

The main difference between Vinted Pro and standard accounts is that Vinted Pro sellers are required to offer 14-day returns on their products. This differs from a standard Vinted account, in which items can only be returned under certain conditions.

If you’re a limited company, you’ll need to list your company details, such as your business address, on your page. But sole traders can choose to keep this information private.

And if you’re a larger business you can integrate with Vinted’s API, which offers even more options for catalogue management and your own Vinted account manager.

Vinted seller protection – protecting your side hustle

Vinted sellers are protected from lost or damaged items as long as they use Vinted’s prepaid shipping labels, with a maximum compensation of £500.

Damaged packages will also need to have met Vinted’s packing standards and be confirmed damaged by the shipping company.

Lost packages will need to be confirmed lost by the shipping company.

Vinted return policy – how to refund on Vinted as a seller

Occasionally a customer may not be happy with their item and you may need to issue a refund. If you’re a Vinted Pro seller, any sales you make have a 14 day returns window.

If you’re a standard seller, the rules are a little different. Buyers can report an issue if they believe your item:

            • isn’t as described
            • looks like a counterfeit
            • didn’t arrive
            • arrived damaged

If your item arrives damaged or not as described, you’ll likely have to offer a refund. If your buyer has questions or issues with the item, Vinted recommends you have a conversation with the buyer to find a resolution.

            • refund without return – the buyer gets a refund and keeps the item
            • refund with a return – you refund the buyer once they’ve returned the item to you

How to sell on Vinted – key takeaways

Vinted is an easy, cost-effective side hustle. Follow these steps to declutter your wardrobe and make money at the same time:

            1. Get your listings right: start by creating a trusted profile, then build your first listing with clear photos taken in natural light, a neutral background, and an honest, detailed description.
            2. Price strategically: research similar items to set a fair price (and consider listing for slightly more to allow for offers). Offer bundle discounts to increase your sales, and be sure to use secure packaging with proof of postage.
            3. Sell smarter: increase sales by refreshing old listings, responding to messages quickly, and listing at peak times. For more visibility, you can pay to “bump” individual items or use “Wardrobe Spotlight” to promote your whole account.
            4. Know your business: Be aware that regular, profitable selling may be classed as trading income by HMRC, and you’ll need to keep records. If you’re running a larger operation, you can upgrade to a Vinted Pro account, which offers more business features and management options.
            5. Protection and returns: Vinted offers seller protection for lost or damaged items if you use their prepaid labels. As a standard seller, you may need to issue a refund if an item is not as described, arrives damaged, or is a counterfeit.

Vinted FAQs for small business owners

            Are there Vinted seller fees?

There are no fees when you sell on Vinted. Instead, buyers pay a buyer protection fee to cover these costs, meaning sellers keep the full item price for themselves.

However, you can pay to ‘bump’ an item to display it higher on the app’s feed. Your item is then shown to users searching the relevant criteria – such as its specific size or brand.

Is selling on Vinted worth it?

Yes – especially for casual sellers. If you’re selling high volumes, you should consider tax and insurance.

Do I need a Vinted business account?

Not unless you’re selling at scale. For casual use, a personal Vinted account is fine.

How does postage work on Vinted?

The cost of shipping is paid for by the buyer. As the seller, you can choose which shipping options you allow in your store. Vinted postage options include:

            • Evri
            • InPost
            • Yodel
            • DPD
            • Royal Mail

Once a user buys something, they’ll select their chosen shipping option from the choices you’ve given, and you’ll receive a prepaid shipping label generated by Vinted.

Can you get scammed on Vinted as a seller?

Much like other sales platforms, it’s important to be vigilant. Vinted has a secure payment system so be wary of people offering to pay you through another method (such as bank transfer). You should also avoid sharing personal details or opening links from people you don’t know.

Some scammers may pretend to be from Vinted, but legitimate messages from Vinted will always have an authenticity badge next to their username. Vinted has more information on scams and phishing here

How to sell on Vinted without a printer

When you sell an item on Vinted, you can either print the shipping label or get it printed out for you at your drop off point. Using a digital label or QR code instead of printing off your own shipping labels can be beneficial for sellers, as you’ll never be caught out without ink or paper at the last minute.

Just make sure you check which couriers allow you to print out your label at a drop-off point when selecting your postage options.

How old do you have to be to sell on Vinted?

You need to be 18 years old to sell on Vinted. If you’re a young entrepreneur, consider asking a parent or guardian to manage the app for you while you focus your efforts on sourcing products to sell.
