A new app for the construction industry is now available to help check the identity and qualifications of workers on site.
The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) launched the Smart Check mobile app on 1 April 2022 to help improve building site safety and reduce fraud.
If you’ve got contractors and employees on a construction site, it’s important that you’re checking who they say they are and that they’ve got the skills to do the job.
There are currently 38 different cards with the CSCS logo, each with their own verification processes. Smart Check now makes it easy to access information about your workers using one single app.
CSCS says the new app is designed to:
- promote a qualified and competent workforce
- tackle fraud
- increase access efficiency

How does it work?
You just need to scan your workers’ CSCS cards using contactless (NFC) or QR code within the app.
Then check if the photo on screen matches the cardholder, and that they have the right level of qualifications to carry out their job.
If you want to continue using your existing card checking systems then you can.
What cards are compatible?
All cards with the CSCS logo will be able to be checked using the app, although a few schemes are yet to go live.
Currently 90 per cent of the 2.1 million cards in the construction industry can be verified using Smart Check. And the following schemes will be available on the app by the end of April: CSWIP, IPAF, ADSA, CISRS, LEEA, CPCS, ACE, PASMA, MPQC, SEIRS, SSPC, Trainthepainter, ICATS.
The app is free to download on Apple iOS and Google Play stores.
