Top task management apps for the self-employed

Task management software can help entrepreneurs and the self-employed work more efficiently.

Task management

The growth of cloud software and mobile apps has meant that small business owners now have a range of powerful tools at their disposal, each with the intention of allowing you to organise your time better, complete tasks more effectively, and manage projects easily.

Whether you are an iPhone, Android, or desktop user, we have compiled a list of the top task management software for the self-employed to help you work smarter.

1. Wunderlist

Wunderlist is a powerful task management platform for browsers and mobiles. It allows you to input tasks quickly and easily, give yourself deadlines, and set reminders. You can arrange tasks into lists, giving yourself the ability to split your work by project. Wunderlist also includes a unique Inbox feature, which allows you to input tasks on the go for sorting at a later time. The browser version also supports Chrome desktop notifications.

Free accounts and paid Pro accounts available.

2. Todoist

Todoist is one of the slickest, most visually appealing task managers available. It is designed in HTML5, meaning that it is compliant across a wide range of browsers and mobile devices. In a similar manner to Wunderlist, Todoist allows you to split your work into projects, and then assign tasks with two clicks. A major downside, though, is that notifications and other key features are only available in the paid Pro account.

3. Cloudship

Cloudship offers another clean, intuitive interface through which you can easily manage your tasks. It provides all of the classic features, including the ability to separate your tasks by project. Additionally, though, Cloudship enables you to add notes to your tasks for extra information, and nest tasks within others. It also offers a time tracking tool, which can be particularly useful for freelancers.

Free accounts and paid Pro accounts available.

4. Basecamp

Basecamp is a more fully featured project management app, but it deserves a mention here because of its prominence. This powerful app allows you to manage your work collaboratively, assigning tasks to specific users while retaining an intuitive, top-level overview of your projects. Unlike Wunderlist and Todoist, Basecamp does not offer free accounts. However, if you are looking for a simple way to manage work across a team, this may well be a good option.

Plans from $20 per month.
