Teenage entrepreneur Ben Towers offers his top work-life balance tips. Find out how he juggles business and social life as a young entrepreneur.

Juggling lots of balls – how I manage my time

Running your own business comes with challenges no matter what your age. Whether you are just starting out or established, juggling a business and a social life can be tough. But in my experience, the key is organisation. If you organise, you can find the time for everything you want to achieve. These are some of my top work-life balance tips…

Time management tools

Coming at the issue from a younger person’s perspective I have always tried to embrace online project/time management software. I use it to make my time at work a lot more productive, which helps me to separate time for my social life.

A personal favourite of mine is Trello. It allows me to bring everything I need to do together. I use what I call the ‘three balls approach’, which involves setting three lists. One is titled ‘basketball’, which is things I MUST do today or it will hurt (much like getting hit with a basketball), one called ‘tennis ball’, which is things I need to get done over the next couple of days (less painful if they hit you) and finally ping-pong ball, which is a list of things that I would like to get done over the week.

In my experience, prioritising this way should be done at the end of the week to build the spine of the lists for the following week. This not only helps you start the week strongly, and enjoy your weekend in the meantime knowing that you are organised, but gives you one fewer task on Monday morning.

Breaks and deadlines

Another thing I have found essential is setting clear deadlines. We always say when you are revising to keep to a strict one hour then break to allow your mind to rest, but why don't we do that in business? When working I always make sure I have a clear time in my head that I am leaving for the day. This makes me a lot more productive with what I am doing and also makes me a lot more focussed and driven.

Don’t forget to have fun

Finally, I’d recommend to anyone serious about their professional life to make sure your social life is AWESOME! The more enjoyable and fun it is, the more productive you will become. Taking time away from work and occupying your mind with enjoyable activities is essential for brain recovery. Your refreshed brain will come up with new ideas because you have taken a break and set it free from the more rigid thought processes of work.

And most importantly, don’t let your social life be dictated by your phone! I am a big believer in taking your social life offline and spending time away from any device that may link you to work.

My top tips

So in summary:

  1. Use a notebook or online software to make ‘to-do lists’
  2. Set clear precise deadlines
  3. Have an AWESOME social life
