Head of Revenue Accounting to join us in Northampton.

The revenue accounting team is responsible for the accounting of all of Simply Business’s revenue from our insurance sales. We’re looking for a qualified accountant to lead and support the revenue team in our Northampton office. 

As the Head of Revenue Accounting you’ll be responsible and accountable for all of the revenue accounting processes, policies and procedures. This role requires excellent understanding, knowledge and experience of financial and operational accounting processes, controls and systems. 

You’ll also be responsible for engaging and understanding the wider finance department and relevant product and change departments to ensure the team is involved in all new initiatives that impact the revenue streams.

This role will report to the Financial Controller and you’ll be responsible for (but not limited to):

  • leading, managing and supporting a team of six with your knowledge, understanding and experience of financial and operational accounting processes specific to the new and existing revenue accounting processes 
  • supporting learning and development of all of the revenue accounting team through coaching, open discussions and training
  • reviewing and supporting with the redesign of existing revenue reconciliation processes that link into the debt management tool to include all debits and credits (such as refunds, chargebacks, etc)

More about your responsibilities and accountabilities:

  • owning all revenue accounting processes, policies and accountabilities  
  • owning all revenue balance sheet reconciliation and month-end processes, with SoX controls understanding and experience
  • owning and supporting product and operational support, leading workstreams and project meetings
  • working closely and partnering with the finance change and systems manager on all new and current processes and controls to be implemented on the debt management tool
  • key liaison between departments, actively involved with strategic and operational decisions that impact revenue accounting and finance as a whole
  • key stakeholder management for debt notification, escalation of unresolved cases and interaction with operations for resolution
  • reviewing and feedback on monthly MI provided, understanding SLAs and identifying gaps in processes and deadlines to ensure they’re fit for purpose
  • assisting FP&A, AP, control teams in the wider finance department with revenue related queries
  • owner of all audit related queries with support from the team
  • active involvement for all ad-hoc projects and queries which impact revenue accounting
  • owning and approving all process documentation for all revenue accounting processes on a quarterly basis and working on process improvements
  • owning the debt management tool and debt notification process – ensuring the tool is kept completely up to date and the data is clean and stable
  • ensuring the team adhere to KPIs on clearing all outstanding debt
  • accountable for any insurer queries and issues resulting from the BDX process and prompt resolution
  • owning SLAs with operations on the adherence and clearance of the finance ticket process
  • taking full ownership of all queries and following through to resolution, giving updates to the financial controller 

What we’re looking for:

  • qualified accountant (ACCA, ACA, CIMA) with minimum three years post-qualification experience
  • experience of leading and developing a team
  • solid understanding of an insurance broker firm
  • excellent people management skills with ability to communicate effectively and efficiently to different levels of staff both financial and non-financial
  • clear understanding of balance sheet reconciliations, numerical analysis controls and ability to investigate and resolve differences
  • first class stakeholder management skills, can manage expectations both upwards and downwards
  • advanced level of computer literacy – proficient in using financial systems and advanced Excel (data manipulation)
  • sound knowledge of Audit, SoX controls, bank processes (BACS/cheque/FPS/CHAPS)
  • attention to detail, prioritisation, time management and organisational skills
  • team player, positive, can-do approach
  • ability to adapt and be flexible to changing priorities 
  • experience of working in a fast-paced, changing environment and open to continuous change
  • excellent ability to identify process improvements
  • ability to manage confidential information in a sensitive way
  • excellent ability to work well under pressure, working accurately with attention to detail and tight deadlines
