Apply now
Simply Business is more than our name. It's how we approach insurance: Make it clear. Make it simple. Make it affordable. By combining exceptional talent, technology, data, and knowledge, Simply Business is the go-to online insurance brokerage that protects small businesses and the entrepreneurs who work hard to build them.

We want team members who have the drive to challenge boundaries. If you’re smart and passionate about delivering brilliant customer experiences, we’d love to hear from you.

We need a Software Test Engineer to join us in Boston.

Our testing manifesto is about testing throughout over testing at the end, preventing defects over detecting them, building the right system over breaking it & testing understanding and assumptions over checking functionality. The goal is to be a subject matter expert in testing by expanding the quality mindset, thinking critically about not just functional, but non-functional requirements such as usability, functionality, performance, security, edge cases, testing strategies and best practices.

About the role

  • This role is more than a practitioner role - it’s a coaching role as well. The focus of “testing” in the industry has missed a massive opportunity of spreading the wealth of testing knowledge into engineering organizations. You will be working directly with your peers to identify and communicate risks before, alongside and after development. By sharing your testing knowledge, you will help your team members share responsibility for quality and not only increase the efficiency and capacity of their teams, but also write higher quality software.

Responsibilities include:

  • Define testing strategies pre-implementation
  • Work closely with developers during implementation to ensure appropriate type and levels of testing
  • Perform functional and non-functional testing
  • Help other team members share responsibility of designing and performing tests
  • Emphasize the importance of executing the right tests
  • Collaborate with product managers, have an understanding of what to test & deliver
  • Help the team create well-defined testable acceptance criteria
  • Help the team to perform testing during earliest stages of implementation
  • Be involved in the pull request review process
  • Assist in root cause analysis with customer facing issues & educate gaps in test approach
  • Create and improve automated tests
  • Choose and use appropriate testing tools and techniques to assess quality
  • Work with testing community to improve test strategies & automation efficiencies

What we are looking for:

  • Work with testing community to improve test strategies & automation efficiencies
  • Critical & Lateral thinking
  • Systematic & Systems thinking
  • Change agent with effective soft skills
  • Product focused - ability to gain a deep understanding of the domain and our business over time
  • Mindset to solve problems not symptoms
  • Passion for testing and quality, and keen to share testing knowledge with others
  • Understand the value of different types of testing techniques and when to apply them
  • Fast to adapt to constant changes and feeling comfortable with it
  • Comfortable pairing with engineers in a distributed, co-located environment
  • Focus on what is most important at all times, realizing when to change the game plan and when to stick to it
  • Great communication skills, both within and outside the team
  • Curiosity in understanding the domain and system architecture
  • Deep understanding of testing principles and a variety of testing techniques and methods
  • Strong understanding of Agile
  • Strong desire to work collaboratively with business teams. We work in cross-functional teams comprising of developers, testers, product managers and any other supporting roles.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work well in our very open and friendly environment
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language, Ruby experience is not essential. You’ll just need to be happy to cross-over to Ruby if you join us – and we will support you with that
  • Understand BDD, ability to work with product managers and developers to clarify business rules and capture these for automated verification
  • Skilled in using a variety of testing tools at all levels in the testing pyramid
  • Worked with continuous integration tools

What's going on with work from home and return to the office?

More and more, people are talking about going back to the workplace and the new normal. At Simply Business, we’re thinking of it as a Better Normal. That means offering our SBers more choice and greater flexibility to work in a way that’s best for their particular job, their teams, and their lives.

We’re shifting to a hybrid working model, so we’ll have employees working virtually and in the office at any given time.

We’re also aware there are times when working together in person is the best way to get things done. We expect our SBers to connect in their hubs (that’s what we call our offices) most likely once every few weeks. That said, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, so we expect all SBers and their teams will find the operating rhythm that works best for them.

If you’re wondering what it might be like for you at Simply Business, our Talent Acquisition is happy to answer any questions. In fact for them, it’s perfectly normal.

Most of our interviews will still take place over Zoom (however, depending on the role, there may be the opportunity/expectation to meet members of the team in-person).  If it looks like you could be a good fit for the role, we’ll ask you to interview on Zoom – you’ll need WiFi and a laptop, or a 4G-enabled smartphone. If you don’t have access to either of these, or you need support with your application, get in touch with us at [email protected] Similarly, please email us with any questions or if you want to pause your application for a bit – we’ll be happy to keep you updated on future opportunities like the one above.
