You’ll join the team that’s responsible for running the Managing General Agent (MGA) at Simply Business. We’re an in-house insurer, supporting the business with a range of products to sell on the Simply Business panel. We’re also an internal innovation hub, testing new ideas we think our customers might like. You’ll be joining our team of underwriters and analysts at an exciting time of growth and development of our MGA. We’re a growing team with big ambitions, which means you’ll have a broad range of responsibilities and the opportunity to learn how insurance businesses really work. Whilst you will have underwriting authority and be expected to assist the team with individual case referrals, this is not a case underwriting role,  this is a portfolio account management underwriting role. 

As a Segment MGA Underwriting Manager you will:

  • Define segment management strategy & roadmap
  • Manage & develop a team of segment underwriters
  • Underwrite at a macro level a range of commercial SME products including, but not limited to, tradespeople & construction, property owners, retail, office and professional indemnity.
  • Work closely with the technical underwriting, pricing and analytics teams within the MGA to deliver the segment strategy. 
  • Explore new initiatives, insurance products and partnerships that will aid in driving innovation and growth to the business
  • Own and manage both internal and external relationships with key stakeholders, building strong and credible relationships with key contacts.
  • Be as comfortable stepping into projects to help change both MGA processes and Simply Business as a whole as you are underwriting a book of business
  • Provide support, and be a sounding board for other members of the team in their day to day work
  • Support our Underwriting Director to develop our UK MGA capability, help grow at the pace we require, whilst maintaining a profitable book of business.
  • Occasionally travel to [London / Northampton] where our other UK office is based. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Ownership and accountability for overall segment & portfolio performance
  • Ownership and definition of the roadmap for the segment underwriting function within the MGA team.
  • Driving through and managing the prioritisation of changes with other areas of the business to ensure the segments are performing in line with targets
  • A leading role in the team, you’ll be responsible for supporting other team members in their own development, as well as problem solving
  • Ensuring the processes and governance are in place for us to manage our products in a compliant and fair way, meeting regulatory requirements
  • Defining the process requirements to ensure we are operating effectively as a co-manufacturer under the Insurance Distribution Directive
  • Working with product teams around the business to realise our MGA strategy

What we are looking for:

  • An underwriter with extensive underwriting experience, ideally in commercial lines, with strong experience of managing and controlling the mechanics of a portfolio of business
  • Experience of running books of business from start to end, including negotiation of commercials, process and performance management 
  • A dynamic, enthusiastic and confident person who possesses the intellect, approachability and personality to influence and gain credibility internally and with our insurer partners
  • Someone who is as comfortable in the detail as they are thinking about the bigger picture
  • Someone who brings a fresh perspective, who will challenge insurance industry norms 
  • A natural innovator, bringing ideas to drive growth and improve efficiency
  • A strong contributor towards a good team becoming a great team. People management experience is preferred
  • A dedication to delivering the maximum impact with the minimum effort, releasing value early wherever possible, creating a sense of urgency and momentum
  • Is passionate about what they do and is excited about the way we work
  • Leadership skills to influence our direction, decisions and execution
  • Someone who demonstrates ownership, responsiveness, and commitment to see tasks through to the end
  • Someone who is able break down complex concepts into easy to understand ideas for varying audiences
  • Completion or near completion of ACII qualification
