Legal Counsel - Corporate Generalist

This role will report to the US Associate General Counsel and be a thought leader and business advisor supporting commercial, tech, product, marketing and other areas of the business. In addition to providing subject matter expertise and collaborating with stakeholders across the business, you will have excellent interpersonal skills and be comfortable juggling multiple projects and priorities.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Handle a wide range of legal issues, including drafting and reviewing commercial agreements, advising on product development issues, corporate governance, data privacy and security, and other legal and business matters.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate a wide range of contracts including non-disclosure, software and licensing, consulting, agency, and partnership agreements.
  • Develop and maintain corporate policies and assist with employee training as needed.
  • Counsel broad cross-functional teams on the development of Simply Business’s insurtech platform.
  • Ensure marketing content and materials are accurate, and comply with relevant federal and state regulations.
  • Research and provide expert, ethical and pragmatic advice on legal and regulatory issues.
  • Comfortable managing disputes and litigation.
  • Manage relationships with outside counsel and assist cross-functional work streams and internal departments.

Required Skills:

  • J.D. from accredited law school.
  • Admitted to practice law and in good standing with at least one state bar.
  • 4-6 years of relevant experience working on a wide variety of matters; prior in-house experience preferable.
  • Experience in drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements.
  • Work in the insurance industry preferred but not required.
  • Ability to provide practical guidance and advice on key issues.
  • Proactive, assertive and capable of handling and prioritizing multiple tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a high level of professional and personal integrity.
  • Ability to be creative and practical with a focus on innovation in a highly regulated industry.
  • Dynamic communication and interpersonal skills with ability to build strong cross functional relationships.
  • Desire to tackle a broad range of issues with a high level of personal integrity, professionalism, intellectual curiosity and willingness to grow.
  • Ability to explain legal issues clearly, concisely and persuasively.

What's going on with work from home and return to the office?

More and more, people are talking about going back to the workplace and the new normal. At Simply Business, we’re thinking of it as a Better Normal. That means offering our SBers more choice and greater flexibility to work in a way that’s best for their particular job, their teams, and their lives.

We’re shifting to a hybrid working model, so we’ll have employees working virtually and in the office at any given time.

We’re also aware there are times when working together in person is the best way to get things done. We expect our SBers to connect in their hubs (that’s what we call our offices) most likely once every few weeks. That said, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, so we expect all SBers and their teams will find the operating rhythm that works best for them.
