We are looking for an Managing Director of MGA (Managing General Agent)

As Managing Director of MGA, you’ll join the team that’s responsible for running the Managing General Agent (MGA) at Simply Business UK. We’re an in-house insurer, supporting the business with a range of products to sell on the Simply Business panel. We’re also an internal innovation hub, testing new ideas we think our customers might like. 
You’ll be joining our team of underwriters and analysts at an exciting time of growth and development of our MGA. You'll be taking the lead of a growing team with big ambitions, responsible for driving this critical part of our business forwards as we pull on our technology and data expertise to take the underwriting of small business into a new era.

As the Managing Director of MGA you will:

  • Report directly to the UK CEO
  • Work closely with the management team to create the UK MGA strategy in line with our organisational vision
  • Apply strategic thinking and provide clear direction to bring people with you
  • Flex your leadership style to create a team environment which personifies SB’s values and fosters a culture of support and high performance
  • Be responsible for maximising the MGA value proposition
  • Review and enable a commercial structure that grows the MGA in line with Simply Business’ commercial objectives
  • Work with external suppliers and advisers to ensure the appropriate legal structure, and that we’re working with the right partners
  • Continue the evolution of our UK MGA as we develop our distribution strategy and launch in new marketplaces
  • Represent Simply Business with external suppliers and capacity providers to achieve the best possible outcomes for us and our customers

Responsibilities include:

  • Setting the high-level purpose of the MGA and the strategy for the team
  • Identifying and creating new alternative structures to increase the value of the MGA within Simply Business
  • Identifying and building partnerships to support the growth and development of the MGA
  • Hitting the in-year and mid-term performance results for MGA growth and loss ratios
  • Making sure the operation of the MGA has a correct compliance and regulatory structure
  • Providing strategic guidance on Simply Business group development projects where appropriate
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with capacity providers to maximise value for Simply Business, including all renegociation and reinsurance processes
  • Attracting, developing, and retaining high performing people in the team to develop a high performance culture

Key capabilities and behaviours:

  • Proven extensive experience in progressively responsible roles within a well-established insurance organisation
  • ACII qualified Chartered Insurer or qualified FIA
  • Ability to use understanding of market trends, regulatory climate, competitors, and the current challenges faced by the insurance industry to enable new commercial models
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation and organisational skills with staff and customers, as well as with new business partners
  • Experience of innovating business models which involve managing and negotiating with external partners, panel insurers, and third party data providers
  • Successful experience of leading, inspiring, and directing large teams and advising on the best path of growth for the business
  • Ability to develop strong teams and empower teams and individuals so that they reach their full potential
  • Previous experience within a Certified Manager position preferred
  • Exposure to external data enrichment in pricing and underwriting would be a benefit, but not a must
