Lack of storage space risking insurance claims
Landlords and homeowners who convert storage space into living areas could be the victims of more theft than ever before, new research has revealed.
According to a study by esure, people are storing more valuable possessions in unsecured sheds and out buildings as a result of shortage space indoors being used for alternative uses.
The survey found that 93 per cent of homeowners leave valuables out in the garden overnight, meaning that any theft would leave them uninsured.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure, said: "The trend towards converting useful storage space into valuable living space and the nation's obsession with hoarding clutter is putting pressure on garden storage and may cause a surge in garden theft as belongings are left unsecured and vulnerable."
Recently, a study by Halifax Insurance found that bikes were being stolen from properties across the UK at a rate of one every 65 seconds.
