The introduction of flexible tenure schemes in to the UK property market could help ease the affordability problems which are currently hurting the industry, a major trade body has claimed.
According to the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), a flexible tenure scheme - under which people can vary their stake in the ownership of their home - could solve the housing crisis.
Abigail Davies, head of policy at the CIH, said that the UK can benefit from similar schemes introduced in other parts of Europe in order to help first-time buyers climb on to the property ladder.
She added: "We are supporting the idea of flexible tenure, so you can stay in the same property and change your tenure over time as your needs change.
The CIH, along with the British Property Federation, is campaigning for a professional rental system in the UK, similar to schemes in the US and Germany.
