Tradesmen were among the vehicle users warned about the dangers of driving with inadequate tyres during extreme weather.

Tyresafe urged drivers to take extra care during the heavy rain and gale force winds battering areas of the UK.

Extra checks on tyres should also help prevent accidents that could lead to accidents that could hit van insurance policies or lead to serious injury.

According to the tyre safety organisation, a quarter of van insurance customers and other motorists drive vehicles with one or more defective or badly warn tyre.

A five-minute check assessing tyre pressure, tread, uneven wear, cuts and bulges is advised.

During the check, van drivers and other motorists should also remove dirt from valves and remove stones and other objects from the tread.

The Met Office has issued warnings about "severe gales" expected to hit north Wales, the Midlands, north England and northern Ireland later today.

Chief forecaster Nick Grahame said transport and power supplies will be disrupted, while damage could occur to trees and buildings

This suggests firms should ensure they have adequate company insurance in place to protect their assets.
