Insects push drivers to distraction

A number of drivers have been involved in motoring accidents as a result of being distracted by insects.

According to the results of a study by esure.com, in any one year, insects have been involved in or the cause of more than 500,000 road accidents.

The company also found that other motoring distractions can include strong sunlight, pedestrians and overheating interiors.

"The symptoms of an insect phobia can be significantly heightened when driving a car, as the feelings of fear and anxiety intensify when one is locked in an enclosed space, producing the potential for a severe phobic response and considerable level of panic," said Alex Gardner, a chartered psychologist and phobia specialist.

Indeed, 21 per cent of respondents confirmed they had removed their hands from the wheel of the vehicle, in an attempt to rid themselves of the insect.
