An Oxford-based organisation has highlighted the impact of exposure to excessively high levels of noise within the workplace.

Potentially affecting tradesmen such as plumbers, builders and electricians, Sound Service has noted that approximately 170,000 individuals in the UK suffer from the effects of excessive workplace noise.

"By law, as an employer, you must assess and identify measures to eliminate or reduce risks from exposure to noise so that you can protect the hearing of your employees," said the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). "Where the risks are low, the actions you take may be simple and inexpensive, but where the risks are high, you should manage them using a prioritised noise-control action plan."

The organisation noted that overly high noise levels in the workplace can cause a number of conditions, including tinnitus and deafness. Employers are obliged to follow legislation stipulated under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, according to the HSE.
