Majority of landlords ready for housing bill

The majority of landlords are aware of the licensing requirements under the new housing bill and are reacting accordingly.

Mortgage Express surveyed over 2,000 of their landlord customers and found that 59 per cent were aware of the mandatory licences which came into force earlier this week for houses in multiple occupancy (HMOs).

Andrew Moss, buy-to-let product manager at the company, commented that the fines for non-compliance are substantial and advised that all landlords should read up on the licences to make sure they are not affected.

He also remarked that the standard of rental accommodation in the UK has already increased significantly over the last decade and that the regulation changes should have minimal impact on the buy-to-let mortgage industry.

"This new legislation is a welcome move that should further raise the standard of accommodation in larger rental properties and have a positive impact on the reputation of the industry," Mr Moss asserted.
