Landlords warned about carbon dioxide risks to tenants
Research from Corgi suggests that landlords should be more vigilant when it comes to carbon dioxide dangers in their properties.
Carbon dioxide related deaths totalled 50 in 2006 but there were also 218 people who suffered injuries as a result of incidents caused by the poisonous gas. All these were caused by faulty household appliances.
Accidents happen usually due to a mix of factors – faulty gas-run appliances, blocked chimneys and flues and blocked air vents.

The Corgi report also states that around 3,000 gas installers who are not Corgi-registered are working illegally in the UK, which means that their work isn’t monitored.
Landlords should be aware of the dangers of carbon dioxide and check their rental properties to make sure all gas and fuel-burning appliances are working efficiently and are not leaking. Fitting a carbon dioxide alarm is a good idea in old properties which may have ageing pipes and gas fittings.
