Fire safety campaign launched for landlords
The Residential Landlords Association (RLA) has launched a new fire safety campaign for landlords, a news story has said.
According to 24 dash, the initiative has been started to support a report by the Local Authorities Coordinating Regulatory Service (Lacors) suggesting realistic requirements for fire safety in the privately rented sector of the housing market.
The plan now focuses on risk assessment, implementation, training, education and enforcement.
How the Lacors guidelines are implemented by the authorities is the main point of concern, said the news provider.
Richard Jones, lawyer and lobbying team leader for the RLA, told the website local councils need to resist the urge to impose additional requirements to the Lacors.
"We have already seen local authorities exceeding the guidelines by demanding inappropriately higher fire safety improvements as a condition of a landlord's licence to rent out shared 'houses in multiple occupation' – such as a typical student house," he stated.
Meanwhile, the Health and Safety Executive recently issued a warning to landlords to check gas appliance flues in ceiling voids due to a potential risk of poisoning.
