Construction quality important for commercial insurance
The design of a property is less significant than its construction for determining the cost of commercial insurance for properties, an expert has claimed.
According to Andy Brown, a commercial insurance broker with Endsleigh, both insurers and surveyors are primarily concerned with the use of non-standard building techniques or materials.
"Generally, [insurers] don't go into the details of the design when they assess [the property]," said Mr Brown.
"It's not really design that affects the quotes, it's more construction material," he added.
Indeed, although design features such as staircases might appear to increase risk - and therefore insurance premiums - insurers are more concerned with the location of the property or the presence of a flat roof.
