Healy to coordinate flood recovery

Prime minister Gordon Brown has announced that communities minister John Healy will coordinate to the government's flood recovery response.

Speaking after the announcement, Mr Healy said that he welcomed the appointment.

"I have seen first hand the effects of flooding in my own constituency Rotherham and last week visited homes and businesses who have suffered," he said.

The minister also said that the government is already working with insurance business body the Association of British Insurers to help provide financial assistance to local authorities and individuals.

Mr Healy went on to state that he will ensure there is a "relentless focus to support the local recovery efforts and ensure that all of those involved play their full part".

Earlier last month, the regional develop agency (RDA) Yorkshire Forward announced that it would providing a £1 million investment to help businesses that have suffered from flooding.

Speaking at the time, Tom Riordan - chief executive of the RDA - said the "exceptional scale" of the flooding warranted the financial support.
