WWT holds corporate manslaughter awareness event

The South Wales Working Well Together Group (WWT) is to hold an event to raise awareness of the forthcoming Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007.

Taking place in Cardiff on March 6th, the event will include a recreation of an "interview under caution", assisted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Attendance at the event is free for any representatives from the construction sector, which may include builders and plumbers.

In front of an audience, in addition to the HSE, the mock interview will involve a representative from a small to medium-sized enterprise and a member of the police.

"Following the success of a similar event last year, the group decided to run another in 2008 and with the new legislation coming into force, this was the obvious theme," said Chantal Nicholls, principal inspector for construction in Wales at the HSE. "The scenario is made up, but the line of questioning is exactly the same as any employer could expect."

Entering into force on April 6th, the act creates the new offence of corporate manslaughter, defined as corporate homicide in Scotland.
