Women train to be tradesmen in West Mids
Women in the Birmingham and Solihull area have been given the opportunity to get on-the-job experience and train for a new career as a skilled tradesman.
The Family Housing Association and the Learning and Skills Council have teamed up to provide this unique training experience to women who are looking for a new career.
LSC Co-ordinator of the EQUAL Agenda project, said: “The women will be working alongside skilled tradesmen who are responsible for carrying out a wide range of repair and maintenance work, including everything from plastering to painting and decorating, plumbing and tiling. Such trades have failed to attract many female applicants in the past and this initiative aims to address this by giving unemployed women a chance to have a go.”
Women who do well and enjoy the training will have the chance to get a place on a relevant training course where they can get the official qualifications and certificates. Some may also be offered full or part time work with the Housing Association, carrying out maintenance in their 2,100 inner city properties.
Teresa Craythorne, one of the first to enter the scheme, said: “I feel I have become more and more confident in the work itself and I notice that when I enter a property female tenants feel a lot more at ease when they see me.”
