Refurbishment sites are being targeted across Westminster in an effort to ensure the safety of the public and site employees.
Conducted by Britain's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) over the week commencing February 25th, the inspections have taken place at a number of sites across Westminster to verify that safe working practices are being maintained.
Other locations in London are also being targeted by the HSE, including Camden, Chelsea and Kensington, where tradesmen such as builders and electricians may be working.
"The level of fatal accidents in refurbishment work in the construction industry is just not acceptable," said Barry Mullen, principal inspector for London at the HSE. "More can be done and should be done to improve safety standards. We will be checking these standards and taking strong action where appropriate."
In related news, provisional figures - released by the HSE for the Westminster area - show that between 2006 and 2007, work at refurbishment sites resulted in the injury of six members of the public and the death of one employee.
