Insurance group offers construction warning
New homes and buildings must be constructed to be more resilient against extreme weather conditions, one expert suggests.
Stephen Haddrill, director-general of the Association of British Insurers (ABI), says that any planned batch of new buildings should not be built on the country's floodplains.
His comments follow the recent floods across Yorkshire and Humberside, which have resulted in a higher-than-average bill for the insurance business.
The speech also comes in the wake of prime minister Gordon Brown's announcement that the government plans to build three million new homes by 2020.
"Britain needs to accelerate new housing developments. But these must be in the right place and to the right design," said Mr Haddrill.
"Let's not create the next disaster before we have put right the current situation."
This week, Mr Haddrill met with government officials to indicate how the insurance business was dealing with the current issues related to the recent flooding in the UK.
