The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published details of findings in relation to the checking of refurbishment sites in north Wales.
According to the results of inspections across a number of refurbishment sites in the area, the HSE has concluded that health and safety standards across sites tend to differ.
One such area where quality tended to vary was in the use and installation of scaffolding.
"The level of fatal and serious accidents in refurbishment work in the construction industry is just not acceptable," said Debbie John, an inspector for the HSE, an organisation funded by the Department for Work and Pensions.
"More can be done and should be done to improve safety standards. We will be checking these standards and taking strong action where appropriate."
Data from the HSE shows that between 2006 and 2007, a total of five individuals - who may have been tradesmen such as plumbers and electricians - lost their lives in Wales' construction sector.
