HSE issues warning to builders

Britain's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a warning to UK-based builders in relation to work on refurbishment sites.

According to the HSE, following the inspection of more than 1,500 separate construction sites for refurbishment, almost one out of every three were considered to pose a life-threatening risk.

"The simple fact is that despite knowing what they should be doing, too many people are prepared to allow bad practices to continue," said Stephen Williams, head of construction at the HSE. "We are determined to tackle this issue head on and will continue to take enforcement action," he added.

Indeed, over a two-month period during the inspections, the HSE implemented enforcement action on 426 occasions. In related news, in 2006 there were 39 fatalities on sites relating to maintenance, refurbishment and repairs.

The HSE works with local authorities to enforce the work of the Health and Safety Commission.
