The UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a warning following a fatality in 2003.
The HSE is calling upon firms to be compliant with regulations to ensure safety when working from a height.
The death of a Sheffield man after a fall from height at work in 2003 has resulted in both the firm and the managing director recently being found guilty of breaching sections 3(1) and 37(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 respectively. The case has highlighted once again the importance of updating and enforcing health and safety procedures to protect employees with high-risk jobs.
"This was a serious breach of obligation to both its own staff and visiting workers, indicative of failure by the company to appreciate the risks from such complex work," said Sandy Carmichael, an inspector with the HSE. "[This] wasteful death could and should have been avoided by straightforward safety precautions," she added.
Within the UK, the requirement to ensure against falling at work is a requirement of the Construction (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1996. Work conducted from a height falls under the remit of the Work at Height Regulations 2005.
Comprehensive insurance is paramount for all businesses that involve high-risk jobs. Public Liability insurance and Employer's Liability insurance should be taken at a minimum.
