The UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has confirmed the merger of the organisation with the Health and Safety Commission (HSC).

Although both the HSC and the HSE were originally established as two separate organisations following the passing of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, the two organisations were merged into one on April 1st 2008.

Among the functions of the HSE is to encourage training and provide finance for research.

"The [HSC] and [HSE] have done an excellent job over the last 30 years in bringing about significant improvements to health and safety at work," said Lord McKenzie, minister for health and safety.

"However … now is the right time to merge the organisations into one."

In a separate statement, Judith Hackitt, chair of the HSE, confirmed her belief that the newly created organisation would act to reinforce the value of health and safety in the UK's places of work.
