A Wandsworth-based contractor has been prosecuted following the collapse of a building in the Islington district of London.
Following the incident, which took place in 2005, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has urged companies engaging in the process of demolition to ensure that safe systems of work have been introduced and are being followed. Such firms may employ tradesmen such as builders, plumbers and electricians.
"This was a serious incident which could have led to multiple injuries if not deaths," said Sarah Snelling, an inspector for the HSE. "Demolition is a high-risk activity, which needs careful planning and effective protection for those in the area."
In relation to the episode, the firm involved was found to have breached Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and fined a total of £15,000, excluding costs. The HSE, established as a consequence of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, is funded by the Department for Work and Pensions.
