SMEs should spend to save on IT security
Britain's small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) should adopt a spend-to-save approach to IT security, it has been claimed.
According to Andrea Simmons, consultant security forum manager for the British Computer Society (BCS), IT security spending should be viewed as an investment and should be seen within the context of risk assessment. "You have house insurance; you may never need it. You have car insurance; you'd hope to never need it. It's in that vein. You need it," said Ms Simmons. "We really need to raise…the importance of information as an organisational aspect, however small the organisation," she added.
Indeed, according to the results of the most recent DTI survey on IT security breaches, last year most threats against system integrity came from malware.
The BCS was established in 1957 and has a membership base of more than 60,000.
