British retailer Tesco has announced a positive sales period over the Christmas season.
According to data released by the retailer, over the course of a six-week period up to January 5th, like-for-like sales in the UK increased by a total of 3.1 per cent.
However, Tesco's data does not incorporate sales of petrol.
"Overall we're thrilled to bits, particularly given how some of the other retailers' results have come out," said Andrew Higginson, finance director for Tesco, in a report by the BBC.
"It was a great Christmas for customers, we did a terrific job in the stores in terms of availability and, you know, it was a profitable Christmas for us."
The firm also reported strong levels of performance in non-food produce.
Internationally, sales grew at a rate of 26.9 per cent.
Established in 1919, Tesco has grown to become the world's third largest retail firm, trailing behind both Wal-Mart and France's Carrefour.
