A retailer in the UK has imposed rations on the sale of rice, it has emerged.
On the back of worldwide shortages of the crop, supermarket chain Lidl has opted to impose rice sale rations across all of its UK-based stores.
Purchases of the crop can no longer exceed an upper limit of 20 kg, where such larger size bags can be purchased.
Established in the 1930s, Lidl is a German multinational company with headquarters in Germany.
Three of the UK's other supermarkets have confirmed that they have not decided to impose restrictions on the sale of the crop.
"We don't have any problem with supply," said a representative from Tesco, in a report by the BBC.
However, the Danish-owned supermarket chain Netto has also imposed restrictions, according to reports.
Customers at the company's stores can now purchase only one 10 kg bag of rice.
