New football season breathes life into pub trade
Pubs around the UK benefited from a welcome boost to trade over the first footballing weekends of the new season.
Many pubs took a hit in profits over the summer, due to the bad weather, smoking ban and with no major televised sporting events to draw punters. But the recent heat wave gave business a kick start and the weekend’s Premiership matches should have pulled in plenty of punters, signalling an end to a very slow summer season.
Neil Williams, spokesman for the British Beer and Pubs Association, said: “Millions enjoy football in the pub every week throughout the season and like to go and watch their favourite team at their local.
"The new season is always a good draw and pubs up and down the country will have been preparing for the start. And with a majority of pubs now screening matches, it is a great way to savour the atmosphere."
