The Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG) has revealed a rise in the amount of shopping conducted online.
Over the course of January 2008, online shopping levels increased by a total of 75 per cent, when compared with the same timeframe during the previous year.
Most of the sales identified were for clothing and electrical items.
"The high growth in electricals and clothing suggests that much of this spending is being driven by shoppers treating themselves to the items missing from their Christmas stockings," said Anthoula Madden, vice-president of the consumer products and retail team at Capgemini UK, a Paris-based company established in 1967.
Ms Madden also noted that the country's January seasonal sales "are as large a phenomenon online as they are on the high street".
In monetary terms, approximately £4.5 billion was spent online last January - an amount greater than any other January on record.
