Insurers handling thousands of flood claims
Since the most recent floods in central and southern England, insurance firms are now said to be dealing with more than 50,000 flood-related claims.
According to data released by the Association of British Insurers (ABI), as a result of this month's floods, claims have been received by 3,500 businesses.
However, the total amount of claims also includes a number of residential claims and those relating to earlier floods in Yorkshire.
"The government must invest more in flood defences and new homes must not be built in areas at high risk of flooding," said Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health at the ABI.
"The priority for insurers is to help their customers pick up the pieces from these devastating floods," he added.
For this months flooding, 12,000 domestic claims have so far been submitted.
The ABI is a UK-based trade association for the country's insurance sector.
