Home business owners should beware of subsidence
In news which may be of interest to those seeking home-office insurance, homeowners have been warned to ensure adequate cover against the risk of subsidence.
According to moneysupermarket.com, insurance claims relating to subsidence on domestic dwellings cost a total of £302 million in 2006.
Indeed, homeowners - which may include those who run a business from home - have been advised to contact their insurance company should evidence of subsidence be detected.
"The most common sign of subsidence is cracks appearing in the wall, especially around the door and window frames," said Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com.
"Any cracks wider than your thumb [could] mean there [is] evidence of subsidence," he added.
If you have any large trees in close vicinity to your property which haven't already been taken into account on your existing policy, you may need to check that this won't affect your insurance payments when the policy is renewed.
