SMEs should ensure a safe work environment

Health and safety should be a high priority for the UK's small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

According to Ray Allger, a representative from the Health and Safety Commission (HSC), the management of health and safety issues within the workplace is feasible and it is important in order to prevent accidents from occurring.

"You can never eliminate all risk from workplaces," said Mr Allger.

"You can manage the risks, but [although] accidents do happen, there are a whole lot of incidents in the workplace which are preventable," he added.

Places of work are governed by the regulatory requirements of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act (1974).

Businesses with employees should ensure that they have Employer's Liability Insurance, as this is mandatory by law. It should be a part of any health and safety plan.
