SMEs need employment law advice

Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the UK should seek advice on employment law, it has been claimed.
According to comments made by Delinda Webb, a representative from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), larger organisations can put in place a number of measures in relation to disputes on dismissal but SMEs may not be in possession of sufficient funding to obtain advice on individual cases as they arise.
"It's absolutely vital that the law is adhered to, because it saves further problems down the line," said Ms Webb. "With a bigger company, they have their set procedures in place. They may have a legal department, whereas many small companies don't," she added.
Between April 1st 2006 and March 31st 2007, the number of tribunal claims rose by 15 per cent, according to data released by the Employment Tribunal Service.
Employer's Liability insurance is a legal requirement for any business that hires staff.
