Britain's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has announced the forthcoming prosecution of a Kent-based tradesman for allegedly conducting gas-related work considered to be illegal.
The individual, who may or may not have been in possession of tradesmen insurance, stands accused by the HSE of breaching Regulation 8(1) of the Gas Safety Regulations 1998 and Section 1(1) of the Employers' Liability Act 1969 after conducting work for elderly individuals in the Kent area.
It is also claimed that the trader is in breach of Regulation 4A(1) Consumer Protection, which has been alleged by Kent County Council.
"In 2005-06 16 people died from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning caused by gas appliances and flues which had not been properly installed or maintained," said the HSE. "When gas does not burn properly, as with other fuels such as coal, wood or oil, excess CO is produced which is poisonous."
Should the individual be found guilty of all offences, a fine of up to £18,500 may be imposed.
