Home workers must consider self-employed insurance
Self-employed workers who operate away from home tend to appreciate the importance of purchasing dedicated self-employed insurance, but many people who work in home offices do not realise that the cover applies to them as well.
Cornhill Direct, one of a number of firms offering a self-employed insurance solution, warns that people working in home offices could find themselves out of pocket if they do not take out adequate insurance.
Spokesman Mark Bishop commented: "Home workers do need to consider the insurance implications because equipment used for commercial purposes may not be adequately covered or covered at all by a standard home insurance policy, particularly if removed from the home."
In addition, Mr Bishop added that home-based workers may need to take out public liability insurance if they ever invite customers or associates into their home on company business.
The trend for working from home has been growing in recent years, and research by the insurer shows that 69 per cent of office workers would work from home if they were given the opportunity.
Even more may jump on the home-working bandwagon following Work Wise UK's National Work From Home Day, making it all the more important that people understand their insurance needs.
