Employers' liability could be tested as a result of claims made by sufferers of hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), it has been suggested.
According to Contract Journal, employers face "substantial" claims from workers suffering from the condition if they had failed to manage exposure to vibrations in a proper fashion.
It is estimated that five million UK workers are exposed to hand-arm vibrations during their employment, Health and Safety Executive figures show.
Some two million of these employees are running "clear risks" of starting to develop Havs.
Sufferers find that their lives are disrupted through lack of sleep and the inability to perform tasks such as fastening their buttons.
It is very important that firms understand their employers' liability with regards to vibration exposure, Contract Journal said.
Employers should also prioritise ensuring precautionary measures are in place so that the risks to their workers are minimised.
In addition, it is expected that employers understand and stick to the guidance of the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations.
The article claims the construction industry is at the forefront of effectively managing workplace exposure to vibrations.
It states the sector is "in a strong position" to demonstrate taking the lead on health and safety in a way that does not negatively impact on efficiency.
