Employers increasingly use social networking sites on candidates

Employers are increasingly making use of social networking websites during the recruitment process, it has been claimed.

According to Anne Fairweather, head of public policy at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), although social networking website users should show caution in respect of the information they post online, employers are increasingly using such sites as an informal method of recruitment.

"I wouldn't say a lot are currently but it is certainly a growing trend," said Ms Fairweather.

"There are lots of graduates on [Facebook] and that is where people are getting quite interested, just in terms of checking out their profile and how they choose to advertise themselves," she added.

Indeed, according to the results of a recent survey by the REC, 86 per cent of employers believe that candidates should be wary about the type of information they post online.
