Cool summer is bad for ice cream SMEs

This year's wet summer has been bad news for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the ice cream sector, it has been claimed.

According to the Ice Cream Alliance, with ice cream sales affected by the poor weather, additional side-effects such as the cancellation of summer fairs would have an additional impact upon vendors.

Indeed, the alliance believes that there is very little the ice cream-selling SME can do, especially if they operate from within a van.

"Events, summer fairs and agricultural events are being cancelled and it's an opportunity which many ice cream vendors take advantage of during the summer," said Mark Gossage, chief executive of the Ice Cream Alliance.

"People aren’t very keen about buying ice cream when they are out and about and it's raining so demand goes down," he added.

The Ice Cream Alliance was formerly known as the Ice Cream Association of Great Britain and Ireland.
