Data recently released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) highlights a rise in the number of unemployed young people in the UK.
The figures show that over the course of the last year, the number of individuals between the ages of 18 and 24, who have been without work for 12 months or more, has increased to over 100,000, reports the Financial Times.
Overall, the increase represents a rise of 35 per cent.
Yet, despite this increase in youth unemployment, the chancellor Alistair Darling noted that the latest employment statistics represent a "healthy set of figures".
Unemployment can result in a number of side effects for those affected, including depression, stress and malnutrition.
In related news, data released separately by the publication shows that the number of British youths claiming incapacity benefits and designated as being too ill to work, has increased to more than 500,000.
