The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has confirmed that although bullying can occur within any level of an organisation, it can be tackled.
Mike Petrook, a representative for the CMI, believes that, in addition to a majority of managers being aware of the potential impact of stress and bullying, the effects can be dealt with through improvements in management training and strong structures.
The CMI's comments follow the publication of a bullying and stress-orientated survey by the Samaritans. "We've discovered there is bullying at all levels," said Mr Petrook. "Around 50 per cent of middle managers are the most bullied, because they're being told by the directors 'you must achieve this', whereas those below them are saying 'we can't do it'."
Among the findings of the Samaritans study was that 80 per cent of employees have experienced bullying at some point over the course of their career.
The report also found that young members of staff are also the most likely to suffer from stress.
