Workers putting job above health, says expert
Workers in the UK are increasingly prioritising their jobs over health due to anxiety brought on by the credit crunch, one healthcare expert has advised.
According to Dr Serene Foster, an immunologist and registered medical herbalist speaking on behalf of Sambucol, people are feeling under pressure at work due to the effects of the credit crunch.
"People are worried about losing their jobs and they will be more than likely to turn up at work when they should really be at home," she said.
Dr Foster added that although the economic conditions should not be taken lightly, if a person is in really bad health then they should be at home.
She said that people do not really know how a cold is going to turn out, but it progresses, particularly if a person is going to work, mixing with other people, working through the day and getting tired.
Research from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development showed sickness absence cost the UK economy £666 per employee in 2007.
