UK employers should tackle training divide

The UK's employers should take action to close the training divide, a new report has claimed.

According to the results of a study by the Trade Union Congress (TUC), there is a marked difference between the training of unskilled and skilled employees in Britain, which firms should act upon to close.

"The UK is becoming an increasingly unequal society and unless employers start to offer skills training equally to all their workforce, the situation is only going to get worse," said Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC. "Employers should be signing up to the Government's skills pledge, and taking advantage of the cash on offer to help them," he added.

The TUC's study - dubbed 'Time to tackle the training divide' - found that in 2006 12 per cent of unskilled employees took part in work-based learning programmes, compared with 41 per cent of employees with degrees.
