Trade unions report lack of new members
The declining membership base of trade unions in the UK has now plateaued with no significant new memberships, it has been claimed.
According to comments by Nigel Stanley, head of communications at the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the membership base of trade unions in the UK has plateaued at around 6.5 million.
"A fall took place between 1980 and about 1997; membership has been pretty steady for the last ten years," said Mr Stanley. "It fell during the Conservative years and has been relatively stabilised since Labour came to power in 1997," he added.
According to the TUC, at their peak in 1980 trade unions enjoyed a larger membership base of 12 million.
The TUC was established in 1868 and is the affiliation organisation for a number of trade unions, including the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union and the Fire Brigades Union.
