SMEs should think global says expert
According to comments made by David Thorp, director of research and information at the Chartered Institute of Marketing, using the internet for advertising purposes can offer an SME access to a potential market on a global scale.
"For SMEs, an internet presence is increasingly vital," said Mr Thorp.
"With over a billion people now online around the world, the internet opens the door for SMEs to a global audience that previously was only accessible to those with large budgets or good contacts," he added.
However, according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), a large number of SMEs are unwilling to engage in internet-based commerce opportunities.
The FSB's comments were made following the publication of a related report by the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee, showing that 18 per cent of SMEs are engaged in e-commerce.
